MY MINICAMS In case you were wondering what I meant by "digital minicams" I thought I would have a page with some information about them. These are all cameras that cost less than $50 and have low resolution, no LCD screens and memory for only about 30 photos at at time. They all give slightly blurry images (in varying degrees) saturated colors as well as other types of distortion. I love 'em! I like these pictures much more than the ones I take with a "proper" camera. I discovered that there was a worldwide group of photographers devoted to the Lomo which is a cheap Russian film camera with similar qualities. They call themselves "Lomographers" and feel I share their aesthetic of spontaneous, low-tech photography. Scanning the web for information about mini digital cameras I came across an eloquent essay by a professional photographer named Michael Reichman about what he calls the "funkycam." In it he expounds upon the same ideas I'm talking about and goes into some technical detail on the subject. It's worth checking out and can be found here.
Camera 1
This was my first minicam. I bought it at Radio Shack on Boxing Day. I thought it would be a fun little toy but I soon realized that I was able to take beautiful, mysterious pictures that were always a surprise to me and that the more chances I took with lighting etc. the more interesting were the results.
Camera 2
I found this one at a little electronics shop an Yonge St. Often the memory seems to clear itself before I can get home and download the pictures into the computer. Unfortunately this does happen every now and then with both this and the previous camera. Still I've got some wonderful pictures with the "Pixie."
Camera 3
I found this one at the checkout counter at Grand and Toy. I got a blue one but I wish I had bought one of each now. I haven't seen them anywhere since. This one is easily my favorite and I especially like the saturated colors I get. I also have less of a problem with losing the pictures before downloading them. I worry because if this one conks out someday I don't think I'll be able to find a replacement.
Camera 4
Of all the minicams I have this one is the most like a "proper" camera with a better degree of resolution, sharper focus an bigger momory. The pictures it gives are not nearly as interesting as those from the other ones I have. It also has a real problem with over-exposed pictures taken in bright sunlight. You can find it at The Source but I don't really see the point in having one.
Camera 5
This one, called the Palm Clix, is the most recent camera I bought. It's pretty similar to the Pixie but at least the buttons are more solid and it doesn't lose the memory easily. I consider it a backup. You can find these at Pharma Plus for about $30.
